I had the same problem. I solved it by deleting all the backups (I saved it to the SC card before deleting it). Yes, the 1.5Gb don't seem to be enough in some cases. I needed about 3.75Gb to get it...

Thanks @chemist, will try removing even *more* data and apps. I know I don't have to mask disk UUID - I manually typed out all that shell output by reading from phone screen and typing to desktop PC...

@Benjamin this is not a release specific issue, it is people not knowing what it means when it says could not finish optimization - the probably needs to be a bug-report against optimization in general
